Alongside siding, for houses in Newton, Brookline and Boston
Other Exterior Services: Roofing, Gutters, Windows & Doors
Siding rarely fails on its own. A rotted fascia board is usually a gutter problem, a soft sill a window problem, stained shingles below the chimney a flashing problem. So alongside siding we also do roofing, gutters, replacement windows, doors, skylights, chimney repair and copperwork, often on the same job.
- Seven trades that meet the siding, roof edge to gutters
- With a siding job or on their own, by one company
- One written estimate for roof, windows, siding and gutters
- Storm-torn shingles or siding: 24-hour emergency service
Why these jobs go with siding
Open a wall for new siding and you see the edges of everything else: drip edge at the roofline, gutter hangers in the fascia, nail fins and flashing tape at the windows, counterflashing at the chimney. If any of these is wrong, water gets behind the new siding, so we fix them while the wall is open.
Roofing repair and replacement
Shingles torn off by a nor’easter, a leak at a vent boot, ice dams that lifted the first courses at the eaves: we repair these, and we replace a roof at the end of its life. Many leaks into siding start at the step flashing where roof meets wall.
Gutters
An overflowing gutter sends water down the siding and rots the fascia and corner boards below. We replace gutters and downspouts, re-pitch sagging runs and replace rotted fascia. On a siding job the gutters go up last, so the hangers bite into sound wood.
Replacement windows
A replacement window means cutting back the siding, setting the nail fin on flashing tape and closing the trim back around it, so it is siding work too. We install the window and redo the J-channel on a vinyl house or the cedar casing on a wood one.
Doors
Entry and storm doors go in the same way: old unit out, sill pan checked, new door flashed and shimmed, trim and siding closed back around it, whether or not we are siding the rest of the house. A door that was never flashed is a common reason for a rotted sill and soft siding under it.
Skylights
Old skylights leak at the curb flashing; the first sign is a stain on the ceiling below. We replace and reflash them, often while already on the roof for a repair.
Chimney repair
Chimney counterflashing is let into the mortar joints; when the mortar fails, water runs behind it and into the wall. We repair the flashing and the counterflashing.
Copperwork
On older houses in Newton and Brookline the valleys, chimney flashing and sometimes the gutters are copper. We do copper flashing, gutters and downspouts.
How it works
- Use the estimate form, or text photos of the problem and of the siding near it to (857) 245-9588.
- On the phone we sort out what is roof, gutter, window or siding, and repair or replacement.
- We measure on site and send one written estimate for all of it.
- Work runs in order: roof and flashing, then windows and doors, then siding and trim, then gutters.
Repair or replace?
If the siding is the main problem, start with siding repair for damage in one place or siding installation and replacement for a whole side; roofing, gutters, windows and doors fold into either job.
Where we work
The copper valleys, old chimneys and wood trim that need this work are thickest in Brookline, about 10 minutes from Chestnut Hill, and in Newton’s own villages, about 5–15. Gutter, fascia and window calls come from every town we side in. Every town and its drive time is on the service area page.
Roof, gutters, windows or doors?
Photos of the roof edge, the gutter run and the window frame tell us most of what we need before a visit. Call or text (857) 245-9588 and send them, whether or not siding is part of the job; or get a free estimate and list every trade you want looked at.
Questions homeowners ask
Can you do the roof and the siding in one job?
Yes, and it is the better order. Roof first, so the drip edge and step flashing are in place before the siding and trim are fitted to them. One estimate and one schedule cover all of it.
My gutters overflow and the siding below is stained. What do you fix first?
The gutter, or the stain comes back. We fix the pitch and the downspout, replace what has rotted below it, whether fascia, corner boards or bottom courses, and then repaint or replace the stained section.
Do windows or a new roof need a permit in Newton or Boston?
Reroofing and replacement windows often do. In Boston that is the city's building permit; in Newton and Brookline the building department issues it. In a historic district, check with the town's historical commission before changing window style or exterior trim.
Will you replace just one piece of copper flashing?
Yes. One failed step flashing or a split valley can be replaced on its own. If the shingles around it are also done we will say so, but a small copper job stays small.
