Siding Repair & Replacement in Newton, MA
Siding repair in Newton is the closest work we do: Chestnut Hill is itself a Newton village, and most jobs are about 5–15 minutes from our door. We fix loose, cracked and rotted siding on clapboard, cedar shingle, vinyl and fiber cement houses, and we replace siding when repair no longer makes sense. A texted photo usually tells us which of the two you need.
- 115 Grove St, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467: a Newton address
- Newton Centre, Waban, Auburndale and West Newton about 5–15 minutes away
- Pre-war clapboard and cedar shingle, 1980s vinyl, newer fiber cement
- Free estimates; a texted photo gets you a first answer
- Tudor stucco, Victorian clapboard and Cape shingles on the same street
Houses in Newton
Newton’s villages are full of pre-war houses: Victorians and Colonial Revivals with painted clapboard, Capes with cedar shingles, Tudors with stucco. Many got vinyl in the 1970s and 80s, nailed straight over the original clapboard. Newer additions in Newton Centre and Waban often have fiber cement lap siding. Each material fails in its own way, so first we identify what is on the wall.
What we fix most often here
- Rot behind the trim. Water runs down behind corner boards and window casings into the clapboard ends. We cut out the rot, replace the boards, prime and paint.
- Split or cupped cedar shingles. We pull the bad ones and slide new shingles up under the course above.
- Loose vinyl after a nor’easter. Panels unlock and the J-channel pulls away. We re-hang and replace them.
- Peeling paint on wood siding. Usually moisture from behind. One crew does the repair and the repaint.
- Ice dam stains under the eaves. We fix the siding and show you the cause.
If the gutter above the stain is the real culprit, see our other exterior services.
Permits and historic districts
Newton has several local historic districts, and inside them a visible change to the siding may need review: clapboard swapped for vinyl, a wider trim board, a different shingle exposure. Like-for-like repair usually does not. Check with the town’s historical commission before any visible change. A whole-house re-side calls for a building permit; cutting out one rotted board normally does not.
How it works
- A photo and your village. A picture of the bad spot and the name of your village is enough to start.
- Estimate on site. We sound the clapboard and trim for soft wood, lift a shingle or a panel to see the housewrap, and leave a written free estimate.
- The work. Repairs are booked once matching clapboard or shingles are on hand; a replacement gets its schedule in writing first.
- Before we leave. You see each repair up close, and the yard goes back as we found it.
Repair or replace?
If the damage is in a few spots and the rest of the wall is sound, repair is the answer, and that is most of our Newton work. If rot keeps turning up on every side, or the vinyl is brittle everywhere, replacement is the better choice. The siding repair and siding installation and replacement pages cover each in depth.

Questions homeowners ask
What counts as a job worth a trip to Newton: one corner board, or a whole wall?
One corner board. Jobs that size are most of our Newton calls: a rotted corner board in Waban, three cracked vinyl panels in Auburndale. The name is Siding Repair Contractor because repair is the day-to-day work.
Does a clapboard repair inside one of Newton's local historic districts need the commission's approval first?
Usually not. The commission reviews visible change, and a repair that puts back the same clapboard profile, exposure and paint color is not one. Vinyl in place of wood, or a wider trim board, is: check with the town's historical commission before that work starts.
Our Newton Tudor has cracks in the stucco between the timbers. Is that siding work?
Yes. Hairline cracks are opened, filled with patching stucco and textured to the wall, and the half-timbers are checked for rot where they meet it, since that joint is where water gets in. A section that sounds hollow has let go of the lath and is cut out and re-coated.
The addition on our Newton Centre house has fiber cement lap siding. Do you repair that as well as wood?
Yes. On an addition the trouble is usually at the seam with the old clapboard, or at a deck where the boards were set with no gap. We replace damaged boards in the same width and texture, flash the corner where the two sidings meet, restore the clearance and paint the new boards to the wall.
