From Chestnut Hill to a Cambridge side street: about 20–25 minutes

Siding Repair & Replacement in Cambridge, MA

Siding repair in Cambridge is close work. Houses stand a few feet apart, a good number are a century old, and plenty sit in historic districts where a street-facing wall has rules. We repair clapboard, cedar shingle and vinyl here and re-side a wall only when it is too far gone, with the district question settled first.

  • About 20–25 minutes from Chestnut Hill, Cambridgeport to West Cambridge
  • Cedar and clapboard repairs go out primed and painted, not bare
  • Tight lots and shared driveways: we plan the access before we quote
  • Historic districts: same material, same exposure, same trim profile
  • Free estimates; hours 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM, seven days a week

Houses in Cambridge

North Cambridge and Cambridgeport are blocks of two-families and triple-deckers from before the war, clapboard originally, and many now sit under vinyl or aluminum put on decades later. Mid-Cambridge has Victorians and larger wood-frame houses with clapboard, cedar shingle and built-up trim. West Cambridge has bigger single-family houses, some still in original shingle under decades of paint.

What we fix most often here

  • Rot in painted cedar shingles. North walls that never dry, shingles split at the nail, courses that cup. We cut out the bad run, weave in new shingles, prime and paint to match.
  • Clapboard splits and soft spots. Usually in the bottom courses and under windows. We fit back-primed clapboard and repaint the wall.
  • Vinyl on two-families. Cracked panels, J-channel pulling away from windows, open seams at corners. We replace panels and rehang loose runs.

Repair or replace? Sound shingles under the paint mean a siding repair, which keeps the original look and the historic review simple. Shingles thin and split on every wall, or vinyl brittle all around, mean replacement.

Permits and historic districts

Cambridge has several historic districts. Inside them, a new siding material on a street-facing wall may need review, so check with the city’s historical commission before you commit; repair in the same material is usually the simplest path.

Re-siding a whole house usually takes a building permit from the city, while a patch on one wall usually does not. We sort that out before the estimate. Most wood-frame houses here predate 1978, so old paint comes with the territory.

How it works

  1. Send a photo. Text a picture of the wall to (857) 245-9588. The first read covers repair or replacement and any district question.
  2. On site. Soft wood gets probed, flashing checked and the access on a tight lot worked out before anything is priced.
  3. Written estimate. Scope, materials and schedule, free and in writing.
  4. Work and cleanup. We keep the sidewalk clear and leave the yard as we found it.

Questions homeowners ask

Our Mid-Cambridge Victorian is in a historic district. Can you still repair the shingles?

Yes. We keep the repair in kind: same shingle, same exposure, same paint color, which is the simplest case for a district. A change of material on the street wall is a different conversation: the city's historical commission reviews it first, and we scope the job to what they allow.

The houses are three feet apart. Can you reach the side wall?

Usually. We use ladders, ladder jacks and short staging, and we ask the neighbor before we set anything on their side. On the narrowest gaps we work top down in short sections.

Will a shingle patch on a West Cambridge house show through the paint?

Not once it is primed and painted. New shingles go on bare, get primer on all faces and a finish coat tinted to the wall as it reads today, and we stop the new paint at a corner board or a window casing rather than in the middle of a wall, so there is no visible edge. If the wall is due for paint anyway, we paint the whole wall.

How long does a one-wall repair on a Cambridgeport two-family take?

Access decides a lot: a wall on a shared driveway goes faster than one hard against a fence. A full re-side on a two-family is a longer schedule.
